PROJECT OBJECTIVE:To reduce the rate of Covid-19 infections by 15% among road users in North Central Nigeria (1st focus Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau) between January and June, 2021.
PROBLEM STATEMENT: The biomedical research community has come out with several vaccines for COVID-19. In the same vein, the road safety research community is preoccupied and positioned to conduct activities to answer questions that have arisen concerning the restructuring of road transportation as a result of the pandemic.
This pandemic is rapidly progressing to become a challenge in virtually every aspect of our lives – restricting mobility, redefining school and work environments, challenging the most robust healthcare systems, and set to leave the world’s economies in tatters.
PROJECT JUSTIFICATION:Crowded commuter transport remains a major challenge in many large cities, the role of commercial motorcycles/crowding and to maintain physical distance as a method of limiting infection spread has put the spotlight on people transport as countries seek to limit the pandemic. Apparently, this means that the concern for road safety is no longer only about reducing road traffic injuries but now includes safety from contracting infectious diseases.
Statistics of covid-19 as of 19th January, 2021. Number of confirmed cases –
Nasarawa – 1335 Benue – 657 Plateau – 6831
PROJECT ACTIVITY:ISARD is organizing a six months (1stand 2ndquarter) special awareness, sensitization and enforcement campaign tagged “say NO to COVID-19, say NO to overloading”. The following are the activities:
- Identify and mobilize 300 key road user actors across the (3) three states.
- To build the capacity of the identified key road users (actors) on covid-19 and its preventive measures.
- To increase/create awareness and sensitization on the use of PPE’s among road users and the general population particularly orphanages, IDP’s, motor parks, churches, mosques and market places etc.
Advocacy visit to key state and non state actors. E.g. FRSC, NPF, NURTW, VIO’s, Transport owners, HOA members, etc.
CONCLUSION: Road travel continues to lead to injury and death, even as the world groans from the pandemic. We at ISARD remain committed in leading the way in making roads safer, no matter the season, or the added dangers occasioned by the pandemic. Our Corporate Account Details is available on request.
